Aston Villa, Newcastle United vying for Jacobo Ramon

Aston Villa and Newcastle United are reportedly keen on signing 21-year-old Spanish defensive prospect Jacobo Ramon from Serie A club Como this summer.

According to a report by Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web, Aston Villa and Newcastle United are interested in Jacobo Ramon. The two aspiring Premier League giants are combing the market for a centre-back heading into the summer transfer window, and they have set their sights on the 21-year-old Como defensive prospect. However, Real Madrid may play spoilsport, as they have a buyback clause in their agreement with the Serie A club.

Who is Jacobo Ramon?

Jacobo Ramon has established himself as one of the best young prospects in Serie A since joining Como from Real Madrid last summer. Born in Madrid, the Spaniard spent his formative years in his hometown and rose through the ranks at Real Madrid’s famed La Fabrica setup. However, the 21-year-old could not establish a foothold in the first-team squad at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Spanish defender hit the ground running at the Serie A club, and he has been a mainstay at the back for Cesc Fabregas’s team. Ramon has amassed nearly 2,500 minutes of game time in 28 outings in all competitions while chipping in with two goals. Meanwhile, the youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs, including Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

A man in demand

Unai Emery wants Aston Villa to sign a centre-back in the summer transfer window, as Tyrone Mings has struggled with fitness issues in recent seasons. Additionally, recent reports have linked the veteran English centre-back with a move away from the West Midlands club. So, Ramon is a viable target for Aston Villa.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United’s interest in Jacobo Ramon is understandable. The Magpies are scouring the market for a centre-back amid uncertainties surrounding Fabian Schar’s long-term future. Additionally, Dan Burn is on the wrong side of 30 and approaching the twilight of his career. So, Ramon is an option worth considering for Newcastle United.

However, Real Madrid may play spoilsport in the battle for Ramon’s signature, as they have a buyback clause that enables them to re-sign the 21-year-old Spaniard from Como this year. With David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger on the wrong side of 30, Los Blancos can do with a centre-back.

Interestingly, Premier League clubs are in a similar situation in the race to sign Nico Paz from Como, and the two youngsters may leave the Serie A club to rejoin Real Madrid in the coming months. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Ramon.
