Roma Higher-Ups Siding with Coach over Players amid Dip

Roma have been leaking oil and losing ground in the UEFA Champions League race for a few months, with Gian Piero Gasperini coming under scrutiny, as, despite a strong start, the Giallorossi are now on par with their point tallies from past campaigns. However, the owners have decided to shield the gaffer this time out, Corriere dello Sport relays.

While the boss isn’t blameless, the Friedkin family is putting the blame for the swoon more on the squad. They are set to stay the course on the bench after having a happy finger in similar situations in the past.

The Roma governors plan to give Gasperini time to build his project, even if the season does not end as they hoped. After all, the Giallorossi haven’t made the top four since 2017/2018. They crashed back to earth after their early performances had fueled their hopes.

Instead, the stance will have significant transfer market ramifications. At this stage, only a handful of players are sure to be safe from a likely cull: Mile Svilar, Gianluca Mancini, Wesley, Niccolò Pisilli, Donyell Malen, and possibly Mario Hermoso, Robinio Vaz, and Neil El Aynaoui. The hierarchy has stopped all renewal talks for now, including those that had almost reached the finish line, and will evaluate everybody in June.

Our Take on Roma and Gasperini

The truth is likely in the middle, as they were overreaching in the first half, and now they are in a tricky spiral. The manager has more than proved his worth elsewhere.  After all, it takes time and the right pieces for his scheme to function fully. It’ll be interesting to see whether the decision will stick and lead to a front-office overhaul.
