Tottenham rival Newcastle United in Giorgio Scalvini chase

Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly compete with Newcastle United in the race to sign 22-year-old Italian international Giorgio Scalvini from Serie A club Atalanta this summer.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini. The two Premier League clubs are eager to reinforce their defensive units by signing a centre-back in the upcoming transfer window.

The report has revealed that Roberto De Zerbi is an admirer of the Chiari-born defender’s talent. Meanwhile, “it is believed that virtually every major club in England holds a strong appreciation for the Italian’s qualities”. So, Tottenham and Newcastle United may face stiff competition for the youngster’s signature.

Giorgio Scalvini and his rollercoaster career so far

Giorgio Scalvini has been one of the most promising defenders in Serie A since breaking into the first-team squad at Atalanta. However, the 22-year-old has endured a topsy-turvy ride in the last few years, as an untimely knee injury blighted his 2024/25 season. So, the youngster has been in and out of the starting lineup this term as he continues to manage his fitness.

The Italian international has only 1,607 minutes of game time across 22 appearances in all competitions thus far. However, Scalvini’s stock remains high, with several high-profile clubs keen on signing him in the summer transfer window. Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.

Premier League adventure beckons?

Giorgio Scalvini has been on Newcastle United’s wishlist for a long time. The continued interest makes sense, as the Magpies are scouring the market for a centre-back this summer amid the advancing years of Fabian Schar and Dan Burn. Additionally, Sven Botman has struggled with fitness issues in recent seasons. So, Scalvini is a viable target for Newcastle United.

As for Tottenham Hotspur, the Lilywhites also hold a long-standing interest in Scalvini. They are in a spot of bother over the long-term futures of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. The two players are mulling over leaving Tottenham this summer after battling to avoid relegation from the Premier League this season.

While Roberto De Zerbi is an admirer of Scalvini’s talent, he also likes Brighton & Hove Albion centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke. However, with other high-profile clubs also pursuing the 22-year-old Italian international, Tottenham may be at a disadvantage, as they cannot offer UEFA Champions League football.
