According to a report from Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Angel Gomes is set to join Marseille in a Bosman move this summer. While Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur were both keen on bringing him back to the Premier League, the English international has decided to continue in France.
Gomes was a part of the Manchester United youth setup back in the day. He even got promoted to their first team back in 2019. But, things did not go according to plan for him at Old Trafford and he left the club next summer to join LOSC Lille.
The decision to move to France has done wonders for him. The 24-year-old slowly went on to establish himself as a key figure in the team, and his impressive performances even helped him break into the England national team.
While the Englishman was on fire during the 2023/24 season, things were not that great for him in the recently concluded season as he struggled with injury and sat on the sidelines for the majority of the second half because of his contract situation.
With his deal during this summer, Lille wanted to extend his contract. But Angel Gomes wanted to part ways with the club. Ever since he made his desire public, multiple top clubs have been looking at ways to sign the youngster.
Manchester United are one of the clubs that are interested in Angel Gomes. They want to re-sign their former academy star as they feel he could be a great fit in Ruben Amorim’s team. He prefers playing as a number ten but is capable enough to feature in other roles as well, which could give them great tactical flexibility.
Apart from the Red Devils, Tottenham were quite keen on signing the 24-year-old. The North London club saw this as a great opportunity to sign a top-quality player for free. They were quite confident about securing his services. But it seems they have been beaten to his signature by Olympique Marseille.
Roberto De Zerbi’s team have seen off competition from two of the biggest English clubs after securing UEFA Champions League football for next season. The Ligue 1 outfit have managed to convince him to snub a return to England and continue in France for now.
