Leeds United set to rival Everton in Sean Longstaff chase

Leeds United are reportedly all set to battle it out with Everton for the services of Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff.

Leeds United have some big plans for this summer’s transfer window as they prepare for their return to the Premier League. Chairman Paraag Marathe has already confirmed that Daniel Farke will continue at the club and he is all set to back him in the market as the German tactician looks to add more quality to his squad.

Farke is looking for more quality and experience in the centre of the park and he is interested in the services of Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff. According to a report from GIVEMESPORT, Leeds are ready to battle David Moyes’ Everton for the signature of the Newcastle academy graduate.

Longstaff has come up the ranks at the Tyneside club and has been a part of their first team since the start of 2019. Over the years, he has featured in a total of 214 games and has even contributed towards 27 goals.

While he was a constant feature in their XI during the 2023/24 season, he only had just over 1,200 minutes of first-team action in his 32 outings last season. He is clearly behind the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton in the pecking order.

With him not a key figure in Eddie Howe’s team and his contract running out in 12 months, multiple clubs are plotting a raid on Newcastle to try and sign the 27-year-old homegrown midfield star.

Leeds and Everton could battle for Longstaff

Leeds are one of the clubs who are keen on signing Longstaff. Farke seems more experienced in midfield as he believes it could go a long way in helping them stay up. He is a massive admirer of the Longstaff, who can feature in any role in midfield and is ready to battle Everton for his services.

Moyes has big plans for the summer. He is looking for more quality in the midfield and feels Longstaff could help them given the amount of experience he has playing in the top flight. They could try to lure him to the club with an important first-team role, something he is unlikely to have at Newcastle.

With him entering the final year of his £50,000-per-week contract, both clubs see this as an opportunity to sign him in a cut-price deal as Newcastle might not want to lose out on for free next summer. While Longstaff did turn down the opportunity to leave the Tyneside club in winter, Everton and Leeds are still willing to try their luck in the summer.

Meanwhile, the Magpies might not want to lose a homegrown star as he could help them with their squad compositions in both the league and the Champions League.
