For a third time this decade, Darío Benedetto (35) is off to a new club. The Argentine striker has agreed to a one-year deal with Newell’s Old Boys.

The 35-year-old spent three seasons at Olympique de Marseille, joining the French side on a four-year deal worth an estimated €14m in August 2019. The versatile attacker, capable of operating as a goal poacher and on the wing, led OM with 11 goals in 26 Ligue 1 appearances during the shortened 2019-20 season. He was loaned from Marseille to Elche in La Liga in August 2021 as he was due to play the final season of his OM contract.

When that loan spell concluded, the man nicknamed “Pipa” returned to Argentina in 2022, playing three seasons at Boca Juniors, his second stint with the Argentine giants. Benedetto experienced great success before coming to France, winning consecutive CONCACAF Champions League trophies at Mexican side Club America, finishing as the joint-top goalscorer of that competition in 2014-15.

He also led the Argentine Primera Division in scoring in 2016-17 and was named the Footballer of the Year in Argentina in 2017.

Benedetto joins a side in Newell’s Old Boys, currently 16th in the domestic table. He was a part of the Boca Juniors squad that made the final of the Copa Libertadores in 2018 and 2023, finishing as runners-up both times.

Internationally, he’s made five appearances for the Argentine national team, failing to find the back of the net.
