Emiliano Martinez keen on Atletico Madrid switch

Emiliano Martinez is reportedly keen to sign for Atletico Madrid, with the World Cup winner close to exiting Aston Villa before a certain PSR deadline.

According to Football Insider, Emiliano Martinez prefers a switch to Atletico Madrid over other suitors. The Argentine World Cup winner wants to keep playing at the highest level, as Diego Simeone’s side could make space for his arrival, which would come as a big blow to Manchester United’s chances.

Emiliano Martinez indicated his desire to depart Aston Villa based on how emotional he was at Aston Villa’s final home game of the season. His error on the final matchday eventually cost the club a shot at finishing in the top five, and the chances of his departure have increased exponentially since.

Martinez even changed agents, as he is not represented by Jorge Mendes as an A-lister client. There is a big move on the cards for the Aston Villa keeper, who cost them £17 million back in the summer of 2020 from Arsenal. The Birmingham-based club are still dealing with PSR issues, which could see them make a big sale or two before the June 30 deadline.

The Argentine World Cup winner is one of the key names on that sales list, while others like Youri Tielemans, Amadou Onana, Jacob Ramsey and Morgan Rogers all being on that sheet. Emiliano Martinez had interest from Saudi Arabia, but he wishes to keep playing at the top level in Europe.

Manchester United have a firm interest, as they are eager to bring in a new No.1 this summer. However, in the scenario that they cannot sign the £17 million Aston Villa star, Ruben Amorim is prepared to keep Andre Onana in his squad, albeit for another season.

Emiliano Martinez wants Atletico Madrid move

As for the options presented to Martinez, he reportedly prefers a switch to Atletico Madrid over Manchester United on priority. The idea to join the Madrid giants will be centred around uniting with fellow Argentine Diego Simeone as well as some of his national teammates there. Moreover, the Spanish giants are seemingly considering Jan Oblak’s sale, who has interest from Saudi Arabia.

Emiliano Martinez has a contract until 2029, which will give Aston Villa a strong case when negotiating a deal for the keeper. However, should Atletico Madrid make a compelling bid before the PSR deadline, they might well have a huge chance of landing the 32-year-old at the earliest. Martinez would prefer them over other suitors, especially Manchester United, who cannot offer him Champions League football next season.
