Speaking to Bild, following Bayern Munich’s 2-0 win against RB Leipzig, Manuel Neuer made it clear he will not return to the German national team.
With Oliver Baumann, the current number one for Germany, following the consistent injuries to Marc-André ter Stegen, there have been consistent rumours that Neuer could make one last return to the German national team, similar to how Toni Kroos returned for Euro 2024.
When asked if his decision to retire following the Euros was set in stone, Neuer said:
“Yes.”
The 39-year-old then added about the current number one:
“He is now number 1 and he is doing his job very well. He has generally shown very good performances and of course I’m keeping my fingers crossed for him and wish him all the best.”
Baumann will remain Germany’s number one as long as ter Stegen remains inconsistent. The current Girona loanee has struggled for game time after being ostracised by Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick, and when arriving at Girona, he has since picked up another injury. It is looking unlikely that he will be able to play for the national team in the summer.
While competing for the other places are Freiburg’s Noah Atubolu, Augsburg keeper Finn Dahmen and Stuttgart number one, Alexander Nübel.
