Barcelona could sign two defenders this summer, with the possibility opening up for one of those to be a full-back. Joao Cancelo will find it difficult to remain at the Spotify Camp Nou on a permanent basis, and if he leaves, there would be chances for a replacement to be brought in by sporting director Deco.
One of the areas of concern Barcelona have ahead of the summer is at left-back, where Alejandro Balde has been off the boil for some time. Furthermore, he has been linked with a move to the Premier League, which would certainly prompt the Catalans to enter the market to replace him.
If that happens, Marc Cucurella could be well-placed to return to Barcelona, whose academy he came through. Earlier this week, he admitted that he would find it difficult to turn down the chance to re-sign for the Catalans, although these comments have landed him in hot bother at Chelsea.
As per ED, Cucurella has been issued with a formal warning by Chelsea regarding his comments on a possible Barcelona return. Unlike teammate Enzo Fernandez, who has been banished from the first team fold for the time being, he has not been made unavailable for action, but he has been made aware that his conduct was not good.
In regards to a possible Barcelona return for Cucurella, there is no doubt that it would be an excellent move from the club’s perspective. The 27-year-old has been regarded as one of the world’s best left-backs for some time, and his arrival would certainly improve a position that has caused concerns over the last 12-18 months.
However, it would not be easy for Barcelona to re-sign Cucurella. Chelsea have no plans to sell, meaning that a high transfer fee could be commanded – which is something that the La Liga leaders would be unable to pay out due to their limited transfer functionality.
