Arthur Vermeeren set to return to RB Leipzig upon expiry of Marseille loan

It will be a busy summer at Olympique de Marseille. Beyond their search for a new president, barring a U-turn, they will also be in the market for a replacement for sporting director Mehdi Benatia.

There will also be plenty of turnover in the squad. There are several players on loan at Marseille with buy options, including Arthur Vermeeren (21), who, according to a report from RMC Sport, is set to depart rather than extend his stay at the Vélodrome.

The Belgian arrived on loan from RB Leipzig at the start of the season and initially impressed under former manager Roberto De Zerbi. However, as the season has progressed, his influence has waned. Under Habib Beye, he has fallen out of favour, to the extent that he has failed to get on the pitch in the last three games in Ligue 1. His last start came against Stade Brestois on 20th February. He was hooked at half-time in that game as OM lost 2-0.

Unless there is a change of heart, Vermeeren’s €20m buy option will not be triggered at the end of the season.
