Newcastle United want to sign Yangel Herrera

Newcastle United are among three clubs vying for the signature of Girona midfield star Yangel Herrera, with Atletico Madrid and Nottingham Forest in the mix.

According to Fichajes, Newcastle United are vying to sign Yangel Herrera from Girona in the summer. The Magpies are one of the three clubs chasing the Venezuelan midfielder in the close season to strengthen their squad, with Nottingham Forest and Atletico Madrid in the mix for him too.

Yangel Herrera has had a career that has seen the midfielder climb from below up to the top level. Manchester City were the team that brought him to England from Atletico Venezuela in 2017, but he never made an appearance for them.

He’s had spells at SD Huesca, Espanyol and Granada, while the loan move to Manchester City’s sister club Girona was made permanent later. Under Michel, he has established himself as a top La Liga midfielder and already has plenty of clubs chasing his signature ahead of the summer. Herrera’s current deal expires in 2027, with the Spanish side now ready to accept a fee close to €20 million.

The 27-year-old South American has Newcastle Untied chasing for his signature, with the Magpies eager to strengthen their midfielder in the summer. Eddie Howe does not want to lose some of his notable stars with the club expected to keep the likes of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, while they are eager to add to the squad.

The Magpies are linked with Matteo Guendouzi as an option but could look at the prospect of signing Herrera in the summer. The big issue for Newcastle United is the interest from elsewhere, as Atletico Madrid and Nottingham Forest are among those keen on the 27-year-old South American from Girona.

Newcastle United face a three-way battle for Yangel Herrera

Atletico Madrid are in the market for a new central midfielder with high energy and good reading of the game. Herrera seems like a solid option for them given he knows the league well, although they have shown interest in the likes of Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea.

Nottingham Forest are another option keen to bolster their squad in the summer as they currently anticipate Champions League football or at least part take in the Europa League next season. Hence the need to sign quality players, as a midfielder would be needed to improve their overall quality. Both Atletico Madrid and Forest could pose a big threat to Newcastle United in their efforts to sign Herrera.
