According to a report from TBR, Tottenham are all set to make Mathys Tel their first signing of the summer. The Bayern Munich loanee has impressed during his short spell at the North London club and they are pushing to make his move permanent.
Tel came up the ranks and made a name for himself while playing for Stade Rennais before making the move to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022. The move to the German giants didn’t really go according to plan as he only had limited opportunities.
Despite being more of a squad player, he did contribute towards 23 goals while playing for Bayern. With him struggling to get minutes under Vincent Kompany, Tottenham knocked on the German club’s door during the winter transfer window.
After long-drawn negotiations, they managed to secure his services on a short loan spell with a buy option worth £45 million. Ange Posteoglou has given the 20-year-old a significant amount of game time in England and he has certainly made the most out of it with four-goal contributions in his 16 outings.
While still a raw talent with immense potential, his performances have impressed Spurs, who are now keen to sign him permanently. The North London club have opened talks with the 20-year-old’s representatives and have indicated that they would want him to continue at the club.
They can straightaway trigger the £45 million buy option but Spurs want to renegotiate with Bayern. They want to further lower the price tag. The German club do not consider him an important part of their plans and are willing to sanction his departure if Tel indicates he wants to join Tottenham permanently. But it will be interesting to see if they are willing to lower their demands.
Meanwhile, Tel’s decision to continue at the North London club might depend on their Europa League campaign. If they manage to win the title and secure a spot in next season’s Champions League, the 20-year-old could certainly choose to stay. With Bayern pushing to sign Florian Wirtz, the funds raised from Tel’s departure can be of great help to them.
