According to Paul Joyce, Liverpool are keen on acquiring the services of Jeremie Frimpong and they are all set to make him their first signing of the summer. The Reds are ready to trigger his release clause and they are already in talks with the player to finalise the deal.
While things didn’t work out for Frimpong at Manchester City, he got his career back on track at Celtic before joining Bayer Leverkusen at the start of 2021. The 24-year-old has only gone from strength to strength since and is widely regarded as one of the best wing-backs in the world.
Xabi Alonso prefers using in an attacking role but he is capable enough to feature as a full-back as well as a right-winger if needed. His consistent performances for the German outfit, his massive potential and his versatility are major reasons why some of the biggest clubs want to sign him.
While multiple top clubs are willing to fight for his signature, Liverpool have emerged as a potential destination. The Reds have been forced to look into the market for a new right-back as Trent Alexander-Arnold is on the verge of securing a free transfer to Real Madrid when the season ends.
With him leaving, the Reds do need more quality on the right flank. While Conor Bradley has certainly had an impressive rise and he could eventually be their first-choice full-back, Slot isn’t convinced about him being the preferred choice starting next season.
Frimpong’s attacking attributes suggest he can certainly help fill the void left by Alexander-Arnold. The 24-year-old Dutch international will be considered a homegrown player as he was a part of the City setup from 2010 to 2019.
Liverpool are very keen on adding him to their squad and he is set to be their first signing of the summer. They will soon approach the German club and formally trigger the £30 million release clause to get a deal over the line.
People at the club believe they are getting world-class players for a bargain fee, as a result, they want to ensure they don’t end up missing out on him. They are holding talks with his camp as they look to reach an agreement on personal terms.
Frimpong is certainly keen on making the move as he wants to play alongside his international teammates Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch. Once they have everything figured out with the player, they will trigger the clause to add him to their squad.
