According to Sebastian Vidal, Tottenham are the latest to enter the race for Morgan Gibbs-White, as incoming manager Thomas Frank eyes a statement signing to kick start his tenure. The Nottingham Forest star was heavily linked with a move to Manchester City, with Pep Guardiola’s side no longer in the running.
As soon as it became clear that Kevin De Bruyne would not continue with Manchester City, Morgan Gibbs-White was the first name linked with a move to replace the Belgian. The impact the England international had for Nottingham Forest last season did not go under the radar, as some of the top Premier League sides are interested.
Manchester City were trying to sign Gibbs-White, although they have since agreed a move for Rayan Cherki, which more or less ends their pursuit of the Forest star. Gibbs-White had 17 goal contributions across all competitions for Forest last season, and coming close to qualifying for the Champions League, the England international could seek a move to a club playing in that competition.
Tottenham are the latest to enter the race for the 17 G/A playmaker, as the potential exit of Manchester City from the race does come across as a boost for Spurs. With the North Londoners qualifying for the Champions League by winning the Europa League, they can attract top talents to their club, with Gibbs-White certainly one in that category.
Incoming boss Thomas Frank wants a marquee statement signing in this window to kickstart his reign in north London. Whether Gibbs-White is that player remains the question, although he is someone that gives the new coach a better option than James Maddison, who has been underwhelming since joining Spurs.
Tottenham are also linked with Brentford’s Mikkel Damsgaard, which indicates that Frank indeed wants a new attacking midfielder in the summer. Gibbs-White could indeed make a difference in this team, with Sebastian Vidal insisting Spurs could table a €60 million deal.
Nottingham Forest were demanding much more than €100 million when Manchester City first came into the picture. Whether their stance has softened since remains the question, as Gibbs-White will not come cheap, and will cost significantly more than the €60 million mentioned by the journalist.
