Newcastle United retain Giorgio Scalvini interest

Newcastle United will reportedly look to sign 21-year-old Italian international Giorgio Scalvini from Serie A club Atalanta in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Giorgio Scalvini is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are eager to bolster their defensive unit by signing a centre-back in the summer transfer window. So, the 21-year-old Atalanta defender has emerged as a target for the Tyneside outfit.

Giorgio Scalvini and his career so far

Giorgio Scalvini has established himself as one of the best young prospects in Serie A since breaking into the first-team squad at Atalanta BC. A native of Chiari, the highly-rated centre-back spent his formative years in Italy, starting his youth career at Brescia Calcio but graduated from the youth division at Atalanta BC.

Scalvini broke into the first-team squad at the Gewiss Stadium as a 17-year-old in October 2021 before becoming a mainstay at the back for La Dea. However, an untimely knee injury meant he managed only 371 minutes of game time across eight appearances in all competitions, with his campaign ending prematurely.

That injury has not hampered Scalvini’s stock in the market, with several high-profile clubs across Europe setting their sights on him. Newcastle United will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window, although they will face stiff competition from Inter Milan and Juventus for his signature.

Premier League move on the horizon?

Giorgio Scalvini has been on Newcastle United’s radar for a long time. The continued interest is understandable, as Fabian Schar, Dan Burn, and Jamaal Lascelles are on the wrong side of 30. In addition, Sven Botman struggled with fitness issues in the 2024/25 season. That has compelled Newcastle United to seek a top-class centre-back in the summer transfer window.

So, several candidates, including Tiago Djalo, have emerged on Newcastle United’s radar, with Scalvini also a viable target. However, a summer move may not see the light of day, considering the young defender has yet to attain full fitness, making him a risky option.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United will face stiff competition from Inter Milan and Juventus for Scalvini’s signature. So, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the 21-year-old Italian defensive prospect.
