Liverpool abandon summer move for Bryan Mbeumo

Liverpool will not pursue a move to sign 25-year-old Cameroonian international Bryan Mbeumo from Premier League club Brentford in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Football Insider, Bryan Mbeumo is no longer the subject of interest from Liverpool. The Reds have been keen on reinforcing their offensive unit in the summer transfer window. However, they will not launch the offensive to sign the Brentford attacker, even though the Premier League club’s asking price of £60 million would have been affordable.

Bryan Mbeumo and his rise with Brentford

Bryan Mbeumo has established himself as one of the best attackers in the Premier League in the last few years. The French-born forward spent his formative years in the country of his birth but has chosen to represent Cameroon in international football. Meanwhile, he has been with Brentford since August 2019.

The 25-year-old has been with Brentford throughout the West London club’s Premier League journey, and he has been integral in the Bees’ bid to remain in the top flight. Mbeumo has been one of the most productive attackers for an English outfit this season, contributing to 26 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions, finding the back of the net 18 times and providing eight assists.

Meanwhile, Mbeumo’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. Premier League bigwigs, in particular, are keen on signing the Cameroonian international, with widespread reports linking Liverpool with the Brentford forward.

What next?

Liverpool mulled over signing Bryan Mbeumo for several months when Mohamed Salah’s long-term future was uncertain. The Merseyside outfit scoured the market for potential replacements, with several candidates emerging on the club’s wishlist. So, Mbeumo was a viable target for Liverpool.

However, the Reds have cooled their interest in the 25-year-old French-born forward. The new stance makes sense, considering Salah has signed a new two-year contract with Liverpool. So, with Mbeumo playing in the same position as the Liverpool talisman, the Premier League champions do not need a right-sided attacker.

Brentford’s asking price of £60 million would not have posed a problem for Liverpool. However, with the newly-crowned Premier League champions no longer chasing the Cameroonian international, it will be interesting to see what the future has in store for him.
