According to L’Equipe, Christopher Nkunku has emerged as a potential attacking target for Manchester United, who have asked for information regarding the player. Chelsea are expected to part ways with the 27-year-old flop, as the Red Devils could potentially think of ways to sign him.
Ruben Amorim wants his attacking setup in place for pre-season, with Manchester United eager to find solutions for several of their targets. Matheus Cunha is already through the door following his move from Wolves, while Manchester United remain linked with Bryan Mbeumo to improve their frontline.
A new striker is also expected to come in, but since they failed with a move for Liam Delap their next alternative target is yet to be confirmed. There are other issues in the squad, as Manchester United are expected to get rid of at least three or four high-profile attackers including Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Marcus Rashford.
They had been among the clubs interested in Christopher Nkunku, as the Red Devils are seemingly ready to rekindle their chase of the 27-year-old Chelsea flop. The Blues are ready to sell the underperforming star, although their asking price proved tricky for many clubs back in January. One of those were Bayern Munich, who still retain an interest, meaning Manchester United will face competition for Nkunku.
Manchester United have now asked for information regarding Nkunku as they could potentially consider him an attacking target. His unique profile does not make him viable for the No.9 role, although he can play across the frontline including as a second striker of sorts. With the many departures expected out of Old Trafford, someone like the 27-year-old Chelsea flop could be a handy addition to balance the quality loss.
Some rumblings on social media pointed at a potential idea to swap Nkunku with Garnacho, and it makes a lot of sense if that were to be true. Chelsea had abandoned the Argentine’s chase despite being in the mix since January, and they could still revive an interest if they failed to bring in another target Jamie Gittens.
Nkunku is already looking at a new challenge as he does not feel important enough in this Chelsea squad. Irrespective of whether the Garnacho formula works, Nkunku could still be an option for Manchester United, provided the Blues are open to letting him leave on a reduced transfer fee; otherwise, the Red Devils may not view this as a viable deal considering the status of their finances.
