Newcastle United inch closer to landing Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are looking to beat Manchester United to the signature of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

According to a report from TBR Football, Newcastle United are very keen on signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer. Eddie Howe’s team are looking for more quality in the final third, and they consider the former Everton star an ideal fit for their system.

While Manchester United are also keen on his signature and have made moves in recent weeks, the Magpies are believed to be the front-runners at this stage.

Calvert-Lewin brought an end to his nine-year-long stint at the Merseyside club at the end of last month. He ran down his deal and is currently a free agent, who is on the lookout for a new club.

The 28-year-old was at the peak of his powers a few seasons back, but injuries have troubled him a lot in recent years. Despite his struggles, the Toffees were ready to hand him a new deal, but he was keen on trying a new challenge.

With him available for free, there are multiple top clubs who want to sign the English international. Manchester United are one of the clubs that are interested in him. The Red Devils are looking to add a new striker to the mix ahead of next season.

With them struggling financially, Calvert-Lewin is seen as a great market opportunity. He can not only lead the line for them but also accept a backup role. The Manchester-based giants have already held talks with him.

Newcastle are leading the race for Calvert-Lewin

While United have been making moves, Newcastle are firmly in the race to sign the 28-year-old. Eddie Howe is a massive admirer of the former Everton star and would love to have him at his disposal.

Alexander Isak isn’t going anywhere, and there are chances Callum Wilson ends up staying at the club for another year, despite that Howe wants to add Calvert-Lewin to the mix.

United can certainly cause problems for them, but at this stage, the Magpies have held the most advanced talks with the English striker. They seem optimistic about securing his services; as a result, it will be interesting to see how things pan out.
