Manchester United could be in the market for a new shot-stopper this summer as their new boss, Ruben Amorim, isn’t entirely pleased with the performances of his current options. LOSC Lille’s Lucas Chevalier has emerged as a potential option to strengthen the goalkeeping position and the Red Devils seem to be working towards a potential transfer.
The Premier League giants have recently received a significant boost in their pursuit as the player seems to be interested in playing in England. The 23-year-old shot-stopper was recently named Ligue 1’s goalkeeper of the season and during the UNFP trophy ceremony, he was even asked about his future.
While speaking about what the future potentially holds for him, Chevalier said via : “The Premier League? It’s a championship that makes you dream, the most attractive. When you see Tottenham, Manchester United struggling with crazy players, you can see the level a bit. I have a two-year contract, and you know the president (laughs). I haven’t had any specific offers from this country, but it makes you think.”
Chevalier has come up the ranks at Lille and he has been a part of their first team since the summer of 2020. However, he became more of a regular during the 2022/23 season following an impressive loan spell at Valenciennes FC.
He has slowly gone from strength to strength and he has been one of their standout performers over the last two seasons. He seems to have taken his game to another level this season. The 23-year-old has featured in a total of 47 matches, he has only conceded 52 goals and has kept a clean sheet in 13 outings.
11 of those clean sheets have come in his 33 Ligue 1 outings and his performances have played a massive part in all the success Lille have tasted of late. They still have a slight chance of securing a place in Europe’s top cup competition and it could go a long way in helping them keep hold of the young shot-stopper amidst interest from the likes of Manchester United.
While the Red Devils forked out a significant fee to add Andre Onana to their ranks a few seasons back, the former Inter Milan shot-stopper hasn’t been able to live up to the expectations. His inconsistent performances have forced them to look for a new goalkeeper.
Ruben Amorim seems keen on strengthening that position and he would certainly love to work with someone like Chevalier. The player has certainly suggested that he is interested in playing in the Premier League at some point and he could fancy the opportunity of being the number one at Old Trafford.
But a potential transfer won’t be easy, United could face significant competition from rival clubs. More importantly, Lille would demand a massive fee as he still has over two years left on his deal.
