Tom Heaton in talks to sign Manchester United extension

Manchester United have held talks with veteran backup keeper Tom Heaton over a one-year deal, as he’s expected to stay.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are in talks with Tom Heaton over a new one-year deal to keep the veteran backup keeper at the club. The stopper’s existing deal expires in a few days, with the club certainly planning to keep him around while addressing bringing in a new No.1 following doubts over Andre Onana.

Manchester United’s summer transfer plans certainly involve additions to the goalkeeping department after doubts were cast on Andre Onana’s future. The Cameroonian was left out of the squad for the final game of the season against Aston Villa after an underwhelming campaign that attracted more criticism than praise.

Manchester United are expected to sell Onana, while there are some targets already being considered to replace the current No.1. Burnley’s James Trafford is a reported target, while there are others that are being looked at ahead of the summer transfer window.

Meanwhile, backup keepers Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton were expected to leave, with the former not proving his worth when given the chance. As for the latter, he did not play any minutes for the senior side this season, as he was stationed as the third-choice keeper at the club.

Fabrizio Romano recently posted about Manchester United being in talks to keep Heaton for another season, and it appears they have held conversations to offer him a new one-year deal. The idea is to keep one of the current players from the goalkeeping ranks to maintain continuity and there is an expectation that the veteran backup player will stay put.

Tom Heaton to stay at Manchester United

Manchester United will likely bring at least one new keeper or probably two if the conditions allow them to make those moves. As for Heaton, his experience is seen as valuable, especially if they end up signing new keepers in the window, which will allow the new players to ease with their integration at the club.

A new one-year deal is expected to be agreed between all parties, which might be on similar terms to his existing contract. In the coming days, an announcement could be on the cards, as the veteran backup player is likely to continue for one more season at the very least.
