Barcelona rejected chance to sign Kevin De Bruyne, prefer Luis Diaz

Barcelona have turned down the opportunity to sign Kevin De Bruyne, the Catalan giants have their eyes set on Liverpool’s Luis Diaz.

According to Sport via SportWitness, Kevin De Bruyne offered himself to Barcelona but they have decided against signing the soon-to-be free agent. The Catalan giants prefer signing Liverpool attacking mainstay Luis Diaz over the Belgian international.

De Bruyne’s time at Manchester City will come to an end in a few weeks. The Manchester-based giants have decided against handing their skipper a new deal and he is all set to leave the club after a decade-long spell where he won every major title.

The 2024/25 season didn’t really go according to plan for the 33-year-old. He was no longer a guaranteed starter under Pep Guardiola and he even struggled with a few injury issues. City’s decision to not hand him a new deal has a lot to do with the fact that there has been a significant deep in his performances in recent years.

Despite not being at his best last season, De Bruyne still feels he still has at least another season left in him at the highest level. He wants to play for the biggest club possible and Barcelona was one of the names on his wishlist.

The Belgian attacking midfielder did knock on the Spanish giants’ door. He offered them the chance to sign him this summer and was willing to pen a one-year deal. He was even ready to play out wide but Barcelona have turned down the opportunity.

Barcelona prefer Diaz over De Bruyne

Quite a few top players want to join the Catalan giants at this stage as they feel there is something special in the making at Camp Nou under Hansi Flick. De Bruyne was keen on joining them but they prefer signing Luis Diaz from Liverpool.

Even though signing the Colombian would require a significant fee, while the Belgian will be available on a free transfer, they still prefer Diaz. Flick wants to bring in someone who can be a part of their project for at least the next three to four years.

They consider the Liverpool winger an ideal fit for their team and are looking to push hard for his signature in the coming weeks having reportedly failed with an initial approach. He is a priority target for the Reds and their sporting director, Deco is willing to go all out to sign him.
