Aston Villa make approach for Jhon Lucumi move

Aston Villa will reportedly compete with five other Premier League clubs to sign 26-year-old Colombian international Jhon Lucumi from Serie A club Bologna this summer.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Jhon Lucumi is the subject of interest from Aston Villa. The Villans are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a centre-back in the summer transfer window after Axel Disasi returned to Chelsea after his loan spell at Villa Park. So, the 26-year-old Bologna defender has emerged as a target for the West Midlands outfit.

The rising Premier League giants have submitted an enquiry to discuss a summer move to sign the South American defender from Bologna in the summer transfer window. Meanwhile, Lucumi has a release clause worth £24 million in his contract with the Serie A outfit. However, Aston Villa will face stiff competition from five other Premier League clubs for his signature.

Jhon Lucumi and his Serie A story

Jhon Lucumi has established himself as one of the most dependable centre-backs in Serie A since joining Bologna from KRC Genk in July 2022. A native of Cali, the 26-year-old has come leaps and bounds in the last three years, having been a mainstay at the back for the Rossoblu.

The Colombian international has turned out over 100 times thus far for Bologna while chipping in with one goal and three assists. Meanwhile, Lucumi’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. Premier League outfits, in particular, are keen on signing him, with Aston Villa among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.

Premier League move on the horizon?

Aston Villa’s interest in Jhon Lucumi is understandable. The Villans are scouring the market for a centre-back heading into the summer transfer window after seeing Axel Disasi return to Chelsea after his loan deal ended. In addition, Tyrone Mings is on the wrong side of 30 and approaching the twilight of his career.

So, several candidates, including Aymeric Laporte, have emerged on Aston Villa’s radar, with Lucumi also a viable target. However, the Villans are in a six-way Premier League battle for his signature. Nevertheless, they have submitted an enquiry to sign the Bologna defender in the summer transfer window.

Meanwhile, the 26-year-old Colombian international has a release clause worth £24 million in his contract with the Serie A outfit. However, Aston Villa will aim to seal the deal for less than £24 million to sign Lucumi, and it will be interesting to see if the move sees the light of day.
