According to a report from The Athletic, Darwin Nunez could be heading to Italy this summer as Napoli are keen on acquiring his services. The Naples-based club are gearing up to make an offer for the Uruguayan international, who is no longer an important part of Arne Slot’s plans going forward.
Nunez made a name for himself at Benfica. On the back of his sensational rise, the Reds broke the bank to add him to their squad in 2022. While he did showcase signs of the talent he possesses, the 26-year-old hasn’t really lived up to the expectations.
He was a regular feature in the XI under Jurgen Klopp, but that wasn’t the case under Arne Slot last season. He was involved in a total of 47 matches across competitions but racked up just over 2,000 minutes of first-team action.
The Dutch manager hasn’t been pleased with his overall performance and his efforts. Nunez is also not entirely happy playing under Slot. He was ready to leave in January, but the manager blocked a move away.
The Uruguayan was left frustrated by the decision, and he has now decided to leave Anfield at all costs. While he still has three years left on his deal, the Reds are also ready to sell as long as they receive a decent fee.
While there has been a lot of interest from the Middle East, the player isn’t keen on leaving Europe. Napoli have emerged as a potential destination for the 26-year-old. Conte seeks more quality in the final third and feels Nunez could help their cause.
He could prove to be an ideal replacement for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who left the club in the winter. The Serie A giants are the most serious contenders for his signature. They are gearing up to make a move for him in the near future. With the player keen on joining them, they do have a realistic chance of securing his services. However, the financial side of things certainly won’t be easy for them.
