Liverpool set to sign Jeremie Frimpong in €35 million deal

Liverpool are on the verge of signing Jeremie Frimpong having triggered a release clause in his Bayer Leverkusen contract.

Fabrizio Romano has given a ‘Here We Go’ on Liverpool’s pursuit of Jeremie Frimpong. The Dutchman is set to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold as their new right-back ahead of the new season, as Liverpool have reportedly triggered a €35 million release clause in the Ditchman’s contract.

Liverpool were pushed through their efforts to find an immediate solution to the huge problem in the squad owing to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure. The homegrown star announced his intention to leave the club on a free transfer, which has left a big gap in the squad.

Since the news on Alexander-Arnold came out, Jeremie Frimpong has been their main target to replace the England international. Despite initial doubts about his profile and whether he will suit this Liverpool team, the Merseysiders are on course to get the deal done.

Liverpool were set to trigger his €35 million release clause, and it appears they have done the formalities with Beyer Leverkusen informed of their decision. There will be talks between the two clubs to determine a payment structure, although the deal is considered done for the time being.

Frimpong was open to joining Liverpool and it appears he will get his big career move imminently. Arne Slot’s side have moved efficiently in the market to secure a high-profile replacement for Alexander-Arnoild, as Frimpong has already agreed on personal terms with ease.

Is Jeremie Frimpong an upgrade on Trent Alexander-Arnold?

Both those players have different attributes in them, and when compared, Alexander-Arnold clearly offers more of a balanced profile. There are some lingering doubts over Frimpong’s defensive side of the game, although, with a new coach to learn from, the attack-minded Dutchman could change his approach.

Incidentally, Frimpong excels in the attacking side of the pitch, as he has 17 goals and assists this season. Under Xabi Alonso, the Dutchman has played more as a winger or a wing-back, and Liverpool will benefit from his experience in scoring and creating goals. Hence, the judgment on the €35 million-rated full-back should be reserved up until the time he starts featuring for his new club, as Arne Slot could have a plan in place.
