According to Fabrizio Romano on Give Me Sport, a decision on Viktor Gyokeres’s future is set to arrive after Sporting CP finish their domestic season. Hence, Arsenal and Manchester United face a short wait to determine their chances of landing the Swedish striker.
Viktor Gyokeres has grabbed the headlines in recent weeks as he looks destined to leave Sporting CP and move to the Premier League. The Swede has had two brilliant seasons in Portugal, and his goal for Sporting CP in the final game of the league season secured them back-to-back titles.
There is still a cup final to play against direct rivals Benfica, and after that, his future will be clear. Arsenal have been the club linked heavily with a move, although Manchester United are also seen as contenders alongside a few other teams.
Manchester United have the presence of Ruben Amorim, who was instrumental in the striker’s development at Sporting CP. There might be a case of Manchester United making it to next season’s Champions League by winning the Europa League final, and if that happens, they might have a strong chance.
For, now Arsenal are seen as the front-runners with reports stating they are readying a bumper contract for Viktor Gyokeres. The guarantee of Champions League football might be a big plus-point for the Gunners in this race, with some stories even suggesting Gyokeres and Sporting CP have already green-lit the move to the Emirates.
However, Fabrizio Romano has stated that nothing has been decided yet and clubs must wait a while. Romano said, “Interest remains from Arsenal and Man United, but it will be clear in the next days as Viktor remains focused on Sporting until the end of the season.”
Over the last few weeks, particularly after Andrea Berta’s arrival, Arsenal have ramped up their chase of Gyokeres. Despite links to the rather expensive Alexander Isak as well as the inexperienced Benjamin Sesko, the new Gunners sporting director seems to have his marker on the Sporting CP man as the main striker target.
Gyokeres has contributed to 66 goals this season across all competitions, and while there will be questions about whether he can achieve similar numbers here, even half that will prove beneficial for Arsenal. Hence, the Swede is a big name for the North Londoners in the window, as Manchester United are still considered part of the race.
